12/8/20: HEADER, STEERING COLUMN AND WIRE REMOVAL DETAILS (THE OVER AND UNDER HEADER SITCH)

DECEMBER 8, 2020:

PROGRESS: HEADERS AND STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL:

It would be easy to forget that the driver-side header came out from above with the engine still in the Burb, while the passenger-side header dropped out from under the engine.

That's why I keep this blog. To remember little detail like that.

I've tagged the headers accordingly but figured it wouldn't hurt to mention it here, too. Because it's the little things like this that'll drive you bat-shit crazy if you don't make note of it at the moment. So, noted.

The headers are out now, as is the steering column.

I removed six bolts at the collectors and the header bolts were already out. To get the steering column out I merely had to remove three screws on the outer firewall and a collar (like a hose clamp). I needed to loosen another collar on the side of the firewall. Other than that four 1/2" bolts needed loosening under the dash and the wiring harness to the column needed to be removed to remove the steering column.

Cam2 assisted and out it came.

According to Smeding, the new engine should be in dyno-tuning next week which means I could be taking possession as soon as late next week.

Exciting times, friends.

WIRING REMOVAL DETAILS:

After marking all the wires from a passenger said of the engine and in front of the bulkhead, I carefully pulled the wires to the driver's side and through the bulkhead. These consisted of four red wires and green and tan wires (L&R headlights) coming through the larger hole, and one separate red wire that snakes from the front passenger engine compartment to a one-wire separate hole roughly four inches from the larger hole. Unfortunately, the headlight connections will not fit through the bulkhead so I stopped for the night.

The good news is that all red wires passed through into the driver side inner fender. Other than the headlight connections, no wires are stopping me from removing the front end. The only barrier at this point of removing the AC system's pieces.

NEXT STEPS: AC SYSTEM DISCHARGING,  AND FRONT BUMPER AND STARTER REMOVAL.
